How do we define history as a discipline?
To get off to a good start, it is important to differentiate between two terms:
History - with a capital H - is defined as "the study and writing of past events, whatever their nature and complexity" (source: Wikipedia History page)
History: which is the discipline that studies History, with a capital H.
History is therefore the study of history.
People who study history are called historians. There are two main types of historians: professional historians (those who study the past and write about it), who teach in high schools or colleges.
The other is the amateur historian: these are those who are passionate about a past episode or region of the past, and who set out to study that event in order to learn more about the subject, and in order to advance knowledge.
However, there is a distinction with regard to historians - they may specialise in the study of a particular historical period, like archaeologists or palaeontologists.
History is a way of understanding the world we live in. It allows us to learn about the past of different peoples and their changes. History also allows us to learn more about our own culture and the origins of our customs. It helps us to better understand the society in which we live.
Why study history?
To make our memory work, to avoid mistakes and repetitions, to understand the past and enrich it
History informs us about the past, and will help us not to make the same mistakes in the future
It also helps us to understand the world we live in, by learning from our past and our mistakes. History is an infinite reservoir for politicians, who can learn from what has been done in the past.
But not only that... It helps us to better understand the ideas, religions and cultures of other peoples. History allows us to discover the other and to open our minds to other possibilities.
Is history a discipline in its own right?
Yes... History is divided into several sub-disciplines, such as archaeology and palaeoanthropology, which study past civilisations and their remains. Palaeontology, for example, focuses on the study of prehistoric animal fossils.
In addition to specialisations by period, there are specialisations by subjects, such as the history of mentalities, social history or the history of medicine!
History tutors for primary school students
Primary school students can have a lot of fun learning about historical themes. When children are driven to explore historical events, they enjoy thinking about historical figures, and they particularly enjoy all of the violent, ugly, or just plain mad parts of the stories (which explains why Horrible Histories is so popular).
History in the National Curriculum can be summarized in a few simple statements: placing events in chronological order; identifying contrasts and similarities; writing and discussing about the past; obtaining information from a variety of sources; and asking and answering historical questions. All classes in each year group will complete all of these activities at some point, with the goal of connecting 'then' with 'today.'
When children reach Key Stage 1, they may be asked to learn about specific persons or events that occurred both within and outside of living history. The fact that teachers have greater freedom to choose who or what they want to educate means that there is a great deal more variance between particular schools. People like Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake, as well as Grace Darling and Florence Nightingale, are frequently mentioned as popular possibilities. Historically significant events, such as the Great Fire of London or the first flight of an aeroplane, as well as themes such as castles or toys, make for excellent learning opportunities about the past. There will frequently be a very strong connection to a local event or individual.
At key stage two your child will start to learn about specific time periods history:
The Stone Age.
Ancient Romans
Anglo-Saxons and Scots.
The Vikings
A unit devoted to local history
A time period in history that occurred after 1066 (e.g. World War 2, Victorians, Tudors, the 1960s).
