I began my teaching experience when I was 5, as that was when my sister made her grand entrance into our world. We would usually play “teacher” and I would write the alphabets on our white-board for her to read out loud. Whenever she got them right, it got me giddy and that was when I knew I love to teach. At the age of 18, I was hired as a private tutor for primary school level mathematics, science and history. I loved it so much that I decided to take up a role as a science instructor at international primary schools in Malaysia to conduct after-school science programs. A few years in, I knew I wanted to be an academician so I continued my graduate studies in Biomedical Engineering (Biophotonics). During the four years, I was offered to become a graduate tutor at my university teaching Engineering Mathematics I for undergraduate students. At the same time, I mentored graduate students who were doing their masters and PhD in their respective research work as well.

I am Yasmin, a research enthusiast in the field of Biophotonics, and I love to teach. Being at the front-line of discovery is thrilling, and as a researcher, the journey thus far has been both rewarding and humbling. My pursuit of getting a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and a doctorate degree in Biomedical Engineering had given me the chance to explore outliers, question theories and appreciate dynamic changes that are all relevant towards understanding the crucial why-s and how-s of living in today’s world. Nevertheless, such an adventure would not be meaningful if they are kept to myself. I realized this after being blessed with dedicated teachers and passionate mentors whose support and guidance had shown me a greater sense in acquiring knowledge, and that is the opportunity to share it. I value their time, presence and care that have, in return, aspired me to become just like them for our younger generation. The experience I attained in teaching students of different levels had made me realise that the aim of teaching them should not just to solely ace exams, but to nurture the curiosity and appreciation towards what has been taught. My aim after every tutoring session is for my students to feel happy at the end, not because they could answer questions, but because now they know they have learned something new. Aside from teaching, I enjoy the outdoors, competitive sports like basketball and badminton, and I also play a little bit of piano.
