After studying English, Spanish and economics at A-level, I pursued a business studies and Japanese degree. I also got my first taste of teaching at this time, leading a small Japanese for beginners class on behalf of other students. After graduating, I trained as a copyeditor and proofreader but decided I wanted to work with language in a more social environment, so I moved to Spain to teach English to businesspeople, having completed a TEFL course. Subsequently, I pursued work with a more pastoral focus and spent a year volunteering full-time with schools in London, discovering that I hugely value working alongside young people, particularly of late primary school age. I place importance on patience when teaching and setting achievable goals. I also endeavour to ask perceptive questions to help students think constructively.
About me
Hi. I’m Stan. I tutor the English and verbal reasoning portions of the 11+ exam because my passions are words, language, and the meanings of books. I studied Japanese at university and got to grips with understanding texts full of new language, unfamiliar grammar and tricky turns of phrase. During my studies of the 11+ content, I became convinced that the English and verbal aspects of the assessment are unique in light of the time and language exposure required to well prepare you for these parts of the test. I know the breadth of this preparation can be daunting and is sometimes almost like learning a new language. However, I hope to show you ways to systematically break down the content, giving you confidence in your literacy potential and exam skills without using up all of your time.
